What Causes ADHD in Children?

It's one of the first questions most parents ask once ADHD enters the conversation, and it often comes loaded with something else underneath it: did I do something to cause this? The honest, reassuring answer is no, not in the way that question usually means. This guide sets out what causes ADHD in children, according to current research, and addresses some of the most persistent myths along the way.
What causes ADHD?
There is no single, confirmed cause of ADHD. Instead, research points to a combination of factors, primarily genetic, alongside differences in brain development and, in some cases, environmental influences during pregnancy or early childhood. Most researchers now understand ADHD as arising from an interaction between genetic predisposition and other developmental factors, rather than from any one identifiable cause.

Prenatal and early-life risk factors
Several factors during pregnancy and early childhood are associated with an increased likelihood of ADHD, though none of them guarantee it will develop:
- Premature birth (being born before 37 weeks) is a recognised risk factor with research showing that preterm birth has nearly 2x higher risk of ADHD.
- Exposure to alcohol, recreational drugs, or tobacco during pregnancy has been linked to a higher likelihood of ADHD in the child.
- Exposure to environmental toxins, particularly lead (still sometimes found in paint or pipes in older buildings), is another recognised risk factor.
- Epilepsy or brain injury are also linked to a higher likelihood of ADHD, alongside a number of other neurodevelopmental conditions.
